Tooth Extractions

At Hylan Dental Care, your comfort is our top priority. We ensure that your tooth extraction procedure is as painless as possible. First, our Cleveland Dentist will numb your tooth, gums, and jawbone with an anesthetic. Once the tooth has been successfully removed, we provide extensive instructions you can follow to help care for yourself.

At Hylan Dental Care, we understand that dental visits make some people particularly anxious. If you suffer from severe dental anxiety, we offer professional Sedation Dentistry, which can help alleviate anxieties and keep you calm throughout the procedure.

When getting a tooth extracted, it’s common to feel a significant amount of pressure. This is due to the shifting of tooth in order to widen the socket for removal. Don’t worry, this is natural.

Bleeding

Bleeding is a common side effect of emergency tooth extractions. After extraction, our dental professionals place a wet gauze pack over the extraction site to prevent excessive bleeding and to promote the healing blood clot. Keep pressure on it for 30-45 minutes and replace it if bleeding continues. Slight bleeding may occur for up to 2 days.

Avoid activities that could apply a suction action to the blood clot such as smoking or sucking through a straw.

Rinsing

Do not rinse your mouth immediately following an emergency tooth extraction. On the day after, you can rinse your mouth gently with a glass of warm water mixed with a 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Our Cleveland Dentists suggest you do this every 3-4 hours a day, especially after meals.

Swelling

Following an emergency tooth extraction, some swelling and skin bruising may occur. A cold moist cloth or an ice bag applied to the cheek will keep it to a minimum. Place on the affected area for about 15-20 minutes of every hour for the next 6 hours.

Medications

While our Cleveland Dentists try to make the procedure painless, some residual pain may occur after your emergency tooth extraction. If non-aspirin pain medication does not relieve the discomfort you are experiencing, a stronger medication can be prescribed. Be sure to use all medications as directed.

Food

After an emergency tooth extraction, a light diet with plenty of fluids is recommended for the first day. Avoid carbonated or hot beverages. Chewing should be done away from the extraction site.

Oral Hygiene

Continue brushing and flossing being extra gentle near the extraction site.

Chips

As you heal from your emergency tooth extraction, you may notice small bony fragments working their way through the gums. Our Cleveland Dentists can easily remove them if they are too annoying. Call our office is any unusual symptoms occur.

Missing Tooth Replacement Options

Once you’ve undergone a tooth extraction, there are several options to replace your missing tooth or teeth. At Hylan Dental Care, we offer a variety of options, from dental bridges to dental implants. A dental implant is a more conservative treatment because nothing has to be done to the adjacent teeth, especially if those teeth are healthy.

A dental implant will look so much like your natural tooth that no one will be able to tell you’ve had any work done. For multiple missing teeth, dental implants are also an option. A more economical alternative is a removable partial denture.

And, if all your teeth have been extracted, there are various options in dentures. They can be completely removable, or they can be retained with dental implants. At Hylan Dental, we work with you to determine the best solution. We offer a variety of options and affordable treatments, so you can get the dental care you need, for a price you can afford.
