Oral Hygiene

When we talk about Oral Hygiene, most people assume we are talking about just keeping your teeth clean. And in some sense, we are. However, the real question is how you go about doing that. “..Brushing, maybe?”

When you come into Hylan Dental Care for teeth cleaning, we make a point to coach you on specific home care techniques that will keep your smile stunning (and healthy) between routine cleanings. But in case we caught you in between appointments, allow us to give you a few tips to get you started.

First, the obvious one: brushing your teeth. You should be brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Despite our busy lifestyles, we notice that most people are able to accomplish that. But another key factor in preventing dental disease is flossing at least once a day. Why? Because gum disease and tooth decay almost always stem from excess material and bacteria that gets caught in between teeth (that hasn’t been cleared out by floss/brushing.)

“Okay, but how do I floss?”

  • Slip about the floss (about 18 inches total) between the teeth
  • Press it up under the gum gently
  • Also, wrap the floss around the tooth
  • Scrap the floss away from the gum to clean your tooth
